Honourably Wounded: Stress among Christian Workers

Honourably Wounded was first published in 1987, this title being used in all countries except America where it was called Overcoming Missionary Stress. Over the past fifteen years, Mission and the needs of missionaries have changed, and it became obvious that we needed a revised 2nd edition if the book was to remain useful.

To ensure that my own knowledge was up to date I travelled to meet mission leaders and personnel in many countries, utilising large mission-related conferences to ensure that  my knowledge was as broad-based as possible. I was able to interview many leaders and personnel, and am grateful to all who were willing to talk with me.  I then completely rewrote the original book.   Beginning with a chapter on  the Changing Face of mission, subsequent chapters were on  Understanding Stress, Dealing with Depression and Discouragement,  Adjustment and Culture shock, Occupational Stress, Interpersonal relationships, Parental and Home-Country Stress, Stress and Singleness, Missionary Marriages, Stress and Missionary Children, Burnout and PTSD, Re-entry stress, Caring for Missionaries, and concluded with God's Model for Missionary Care.  Some of the old material is included but has been reworded and updated. Wherever I had enough knowledge I included comments relevant to the New  (Younger) Sending Countries.

My aim has been to keep the book simple so that people enjoy reading it, and to incorporate some professional information from my own and other peoples' research in an easy-read way so that it does not become boring!  I have used Scriptural passages which are  helpful to the topic being discussed.  Please join with me in prayer that missionaries and their leaders, and also stressed-out  Christians and secular people  in the home countries  may be helped by it.
