Overcoming the DarkSide of Leadership:
The paradox of PersonalDysfunction
by Gary L.McIntosh and Samuel D. Rima Sr.

"Overcoming the Dark Side of Leadership: The paradox of Personal Dysfunction" by Gary L. McIntosh and Samuel D. Rima Sr.  Baker Books, 1997 (ISBN: 0-8010-9047-4 (pbk.))  It discusses the issue from the standpoint of the leader including some self evaluations.
The five areas they deal with are:

  • the compulsive leader

  • the narcissistic leader

  • the paranoid leader

  • the codependent leader and

  • the passive-aggressive leader.

  • They use examples from scripture as well as contemporary leaders we all know, including Pres. Clinton.   After discussing each of the dysfunctions, there is a questionnaire that asks about behaviors which are indicative of that particular dysfunction.  This is very helpful.   There is a section on "Redeeming the Dark Side"; the appendices have samples of personal covenants and accountability.   The appendices contain useful approaches on how to monitor your own behavior as well as establishing people to whom the leader can be accountable.  The material is very practical.  All in all, I think that every leader should read this.   However, a leader with this kind of problem may not pay attention unless there is some current pain that will make them pay attention.  Those in member care should also be familiar with this book.
