A brief history of COMIBAM’s member care program-
1994- Panama- During COMIBAM’s conference, Pablo Carrillo with the mission agency PM (Pueblo Musilman or Muslim People) presented a paper entitled “Problemas de Misioneros Latinos en el Campo Pionero” or “The Problems of Latin Missionaries on a New Mission Field”. The article can be found in COMIBAM’s compendium of member care articles, II COMIBAM Assembly, 2003.
1996- United Kingdom- A consultation on missionary attrition was held after the WEA study on attrition came out. David Ruiz, Rudy Girón, Kelly O´Donnell and others met at All Nations College.
1997- Acapulco- COMIBAM Assembly- Carlos Antonio Nasser was named as the first coordinator of the COMIBAM member care program. A workshop on member care was held which included the following panelists, Marcos Armado, Marcia Tostes and Kelly O´Donnell. In the COMIBAM assembly meetings the compendium “En Beneficio de la Ventana 10´40 del Corazón” was distributed. The Spanish translation of Too Valuable to Lose was ready for sale.
1998- Marcia Tostes was named the new coordinator of the COMIBAM member care program. She attended the first MemCa meetings.
1999- Foz de Iguazú- Member care meetings in Brazil. A member care team was formed in Brazil.
2000- Perú- A continental consultation on missionary member care was held. A working group was formed and included the following members, Nilsa Jurado (Puerto Rico), Marcia Tostes (Brazil), Deglya Salazar (Venezuela), and Kelly O´Donnell (France). Deglya Salazar became the coordinator for the online member care forum.
2001- Argentina- Marcia Tostes gave a presentation on member care.
2002- Guatemala y Panamá- Deglya Salazar, Marcia Tostes, David Ruiz and Jesús Londoño met to form the goals for COMIBAM´s member care program. Lori Greenman took over COMIBAM´s online forum for member care in Latin America.
2003- El Salvador- ll COMIBAM Assembly- Gloria Bustamante was named as the new coordinator for the member care program. A member care forum was held the day after the assembly meetings finished. The goals for the member care program were redefined and can be found on the COMIBAM web page www.comibam.org under “programa cuidado integral”.
2004-2005 - In the past few years many articles on missionary care have been translated and can be found on the web www.comibam.org under “programa cuidado integral”. It has been difficult to arrange specific conferences about member care under the auspices of COMIBAM but various mission agencies have arranged their own member care conferences and training, using the materials that have been translated. The online member care forum continues with members from more than 13 countries. The networking continues but with little face to face contact between members.
2005- There will be a new coordinator chosen for the COMIBAM member care program.
